I have only one question:
Is "hiking the Appalachian Trail" a southern euphemism for cruising gay bars? If not, then we should try to popularize it as such. It could become a very delicious locution for referring to the sometimes mysterious activities of Republican politicians.
For example:
What was Senator Craig doing in the airport men's room?
Well, he got caught hiking the Appalachian trail in there again.
