Even curiouser Sanford's
Even curiouser Sanford's state-owned SUV was found at a SC airport parking lot.
Even stranger, the state-owned SUV was also seen at the Atlanta airport. Wonder which it is.
Appalachia? No, I meant Argentina!
(link...)
It's understandable. What could be more consoling than a pleasant drive along the South American coastline after failing to deny unemployment checks to the impoverished citizens of your home state? After all, isn't that what Republicanism is all about?
Argentian tail and
Argentian tail and Appalachian trail sound so phonetically close, it could have been any staff's mix-up.
Apparently the governor was
Apparently the governor was bare, just not on the AT - in Argentina with another woman.
It must have been all that gay marriage that did it
It could only have been that wave of legalized gay marriage around the country that drove Sanford to fly to Argentina and get it on with an Argentinian woman that he met via email.
There's no other explanation.
By the way, I love the way he got all that God stuff into the confession. I half expected him to drop to his knees and do the full Swaggart "I have sinned" routine, with the tearing eyes, etc.
What. A. Hoot.
Does it count as a lie if
Does it count as a lie if your staff pretends to know something when in fact they're just putting out a semi-plausible cover story while they scramble to find your unreliable ass before your political capital flees to somewhere exotic?
Liberty and justice for all.

By the way, there seems to
By the way, there seems to be a distinct lack of gender-specific nouns and pronouns in this story. Does anyone have a good reason to suppose that Sanford sought out the company of a woman? Or is he another McGreevey, just from a party that won't accept homosexuality?
Liberty and justice for all.

I heard him use the pronoun
I heard him use the pronoun "she".
What I'm not clear on is whether he said he had ended the affair. The part of the press conference I heard certainly didn't make that clear.
Blanche Devereaux would
Blanche Devereaux would attribute it to the heat.
And the South Carolinians probably won't lynch him as long as they are assured that the 'other woman' was indeed the other woman.

To all you liberals of low
To all you liberals of low accomplishment:
For God's sake leave the poor man alone! Those of you who have never wielded the extraordinary power of the executive pen thus never having suffered the advice of fools clinging to your coattails in furtherance of their own selfish ends nor the cries of the filthy masses begging for deliverance from their pitiful lives of hopeless underachievement as I have will never comprehend, nor appreciate, such enormous burdens and the resulting pressures which must be relieved from time to time. Why, just thinking about it arouses a compelling need for relief of my own, to which I will tend momentarily. But I must first note my disgust at the appalling, gutter-minded filth going on at this place. Thankfully for our deteriorating society you are now on my radar of justice, so you can expect some changes around here.
Yours turgidly,
I. J. Reilly

Don't cry for me Argentina...
He's still in love with that other woman btw...
I do feel sorry for his wife..Her press release was well written and thoughtful and reveals her as a woman of character.
Him..He is an odd duck as they are saying he is thought of by some, even by some repubs.
His political career is over.
Not that he was a genuine threat to Obama but he might have influenced the train of thought as there is some concern in the public over spending.
I think there still we be, the repubs will be ill placed to take advantage of it.
and the repubs can no longer claim they are morally superior to the rest of us...
They are mortal like us and are frail like the rest of us.
The public realizes this so repubs need to as well. The religious right needs to recognize they've tied themselves to mere humans and not to angels in waiting.
It's like a breath of fresh air.
What the Dems should do right now
The Dems in the House and Senate up in DC should take this opportunity to call for a vote and pass single-payer health care tonight. The Repubs, shown now in full public display for the lying dips they are, would be unable to mount (so to speak) any effective defense.
But will the Dems do anything like this?
Of course not, because the insurance companies own them, just like they own the Repubs.
Overcoming my ugly partisan
Overcoming my ugly partisan glee, I'm finding myself a bit sympathetic toward both Sanfords. The staff lying still gripes me, but people deserve to have some sort of private lives even if Mark Sanford could easily have been more discreet about this and thus gets quite a bit of blame for his own political suicide.
Liberty and justice for all.

"How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?"
This isn't just about his "private" life (or lives, depending on how many other kinds of people he was pretending to be).
When Sanford was a Congressman he voted for three of the four articles of impeachment against Clinton.
In SC, he used his "family values" schtick in campaign advertising over and over and over again.
Perhaps this and Sen. Ensign's self-made mess in Nevada will finally begin to break the choke hold that the evangelicals have had on the Republican Party.
According to this, the correct pronoun may be "they."

Now the issue is stolen emails?
Nice.
Well, at least the Democrats will have a target of Republican arrogance and hypocrisy for the next eighteen months.
And the silence from Republican cultural conservatives is deafening.
I'm sure it will ring in everyone's ears for years to come.
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present.

So the latest is that the
So the latest is that the First Lady (well, marginally speaking, that is) Jenny Sanford can forgive her husband.
This really means that:
A) Jenny Sanford is as ambitious and selfish as her husband.
B) She was his campaign manager in his first governor's race, so she was part of the con job from the beginning, and has her own things to hide.
C) She can't move to another state and start her own political carrer like our current Sec. of State, and South Carolina offers no hope for her on her own.
D) She realizes that the voters of South Carolina are so hypocritically self-righteous that they will forgive the guv, because he's one of them ( "we all have sinned," "we're praying for his family,") versus their outrage for Democrats who sin (ie- President Clinton, "unfit for office").
E) That outside of politics Sanford has no future. He is a small man married to a wealthy wife.
F) All of the above.
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present.

Blame it on Obama
And the silence from Republican cultural conservatives is deafening.
Apparently Rush said that Sanford had been whupped by the president's stimulus bill and saw the country going to hell in a socialist handbag, so Sanford just decided to "blow off a little steam."
So in this case, cheating on one's wife (not really differently from what Clinton did) was Obama's fault. (Let alone that the affair started before Obama ran for office.) Oh, Mount Rushbo, where would the party be without you?
Of course, Sanford started
Of course, Sanford started shtupping his outside woman while Duhbya was still figurehead President. But Rush never let anything so piddling as a fact get in the way of his wingnuttery.

Governor is AWOL when he
Governor is AWOL when he ought to be leading.
As a killer is on a murderous rampage in Upstate South Carolina, and a paltry $2000 reward has been offered, Gov. Sanford and wife Jenny are scheming to con South Carolina into letting him stay in office.
(link...)
It's true Sanford has only one real love in his life: himself.
The sooner South Carolinians remove both Sanford and his wife from the governor's mansion, the better off the state will be.
He's two-timing his wife, and she's two-timing the state.
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present.
President Abraham Lincoln 1862
Darn!
There go all my plans for a SC secession to form the independent nation of JesusLand. A place where all the nuts could go live and leave the rest of us alone. I envisioned a very large Buddy Jesus statue at Fort Sumter, rampant STDs in Myrtle Beach, slavery reinstated for the Charleston elite, and peaches and evangelists as the major exports.
But Sanford just had to drink the Ripple and pound the junk man's drum. Redd Foxx ain't happy with this impostor. And another thing, if the hired help were going to claim the AT excuse, they should at least know when Hike Naked Day occurs!
