What an embarrassment to Tennesseans this man is. On behalf of all of us here I wish to apologize to you citizens of Canada.

An American legislator called Canada "parasitic" on Wednesday for siphoning U.S. dollars to Canada with low prescription drug prices while his country does "all the innovation."

Canada benefits financially from America's role as a world leader in medical advances, Republican Sen. Bob Corker charged in an exchange with a Liberal MP as she testified before a U.S. Senate committee.

Why are republicans so

Why are republicans so opposed to free markets when it comes to drug importation? The drug companies certainly don't have to sell drugs to the Canadians if the price they are willing to pay is to low (supply and demand, Bob), but apparently it is high enough, because the drug companies gladly sell drugs to Canada. The real problem is that by law American citizens, pharmacies, doctors offices, etc are not allowed to shop for drugs on the open market, so we end up paying whatever price the drug companies want us to pay - no free market forces are allowed to work here. Why not allow the markets to work, Bob, instead of crying about what Canada is doing? I guess it's always someone else's fault for these guys.

The argument Bob is buying into is the idea that drug companies need to be protected from competition on the open market because we consumers should subsidies all of that research they do to find new drugs - first, we already fund much of that research because it happens at our universities much more so than the drug companies - the drug companies are the beneficiaries. Has he bothered to look at the profits these companies are making? Do they really need the help the republicans seem so willing to give them?

My sister works for the NIH...

as a grants management specialist. Most of the drugs that are developed are researched and developed by universities with grants from the *GASP* federal government. All these folks that are opposed to "government interference" in the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare industry should take a moment to think about that...without "government interference" you would not have your Viagra today...
