I spoke to Diane Jordan about this and she said that a man she has known for most of her life approached her in her office in the East side county suites and asked her if she thought Ezra Maize could win. She said no, because Republicans run Knox County.

What was she supposed to say? Yes?

She did not initiate the conversation.

Maize evidently took great offense at Jordan's assessment of his chances and decided to have her head.

I'm not sure what this preacher who has been in Knoxville for a relatively short period of time and who rides around to campaign events in a vintage Rolls Royce thinks his chances are, but I would submit that launching an attack on Diane Jordan is not going to help them. This is not a good strategic move for someone trying to build a power base in East Knoxville. You folks in other areas may or may not like her, but Diane Jordan is still extremely popular on her side of town and she's helped more people in this town than the Reverend Maize even knows.

You'd think he (his campaign) would have at least bought the domain name to last after the primaries. Someone goofed!

I'm pretty disappointed with the dem offerings, at all levels in this state, this year.

Maize

I live in Jordan's former district and voted for Diane every time I had the chance. I recently posted that I thought the two Democrats running for mayor were pretty much jokes, and I stand by that. If Ms. Jordan did in fact do that, than she should know better. However, Maize, who is trying to run for County Mayor, should not wage war on someone like Diane Jordan who, by just a few phone calls, represents probably more than 500 or so votes.

Betty is right on the money here!

I haven't personally met him,

I haven't personally met him, but I hear from people who have been heavily involved in the '10 mayoral campaign that Michael McBath is a really good – and really young – guy who is running because he has a story to tell. The story is a tragic one, about his two murdered brothers, and he seems to seriously want to make a difference in his community.
That seems like a pretty good reason to enter the public arena.

Time for a plug

The East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists/ League of Women Voters of Knoxville/Knox County mayoral primary forum is tonight from 7-9 p.m. at West High School on Sutherland Ave.

Burchett and Hutchison on the stage from 7-8; McBath and Maize on the stage from 8-9.

Come out and learn about all the mayoral primary candidates in one evening, in one place, then go vote!

I wonder why the two (or 3? Independent candidates are not included? Did they decline to participate? Are they not allowed to campaign until after the primary? Or do independents not have a separate primary?

More news--

The guy who spoke to Jordan, the Rev. Chris Battle of Tabernacle Baptist Church, is going to be on Channel 10 tonight at 6.
It should be interesting to hear him set the record straight.

And I made one error: Jordan has not known Battle for a long time. He came here from Cincinnati.

marytheprez's picture

Your mistakes in judging this Democratic Candidate

Yes, I sure hope Rev. Battle does set the record straight. Diane Jordan blatantly violated Knox County Election Law. Instead of admitting she made a mistake in talking to the voter who reported her unethical, illegal conversation, she has accused Reverend Ezra Maize of lying...so outrageous.
FYI, Ezra Maize has been a leader in this community for over 7 years. He pastors a church, he is a social worker, mentoring to all families who ask his help at Austin East Magnet High School. He has created a program to help the young troubled youth of the area called "A Second Chance". He was president of the area's NAACP for 2 years. And reporting this violation of election law proves he owes no one, and has the courage and integrity to stand up to the OLD BOY + Diane Network, who have ruled politics here for years. And his vintage car...just so you know, he bought it at a low used car price and is restoring it. That is his hobby...when he is not leading this community. He also has a wonderful wife, working on her education degree at Tusculum and three super children...just so you know. There is a problem with the website which we hope to fix soon. Meantime, before you assume Diane Jordan is telling the truth to suit herself, you better check the facts. And yes, you should attend tonight's debate at West High...especially the bbeanster...you need more education before you continue to repeat gossip and half truths. This man has more integrity and strength of character than all the other candidates running for this office.

Bbeanster's picture

Oh, please. Here's a snippet

Oh, please.
Here's a snippet from the WBIR website re Battle's statement:

"Democrat Ezra Maize, a candidate for Knox County mayor filed a letter of complaint with the Election Commission Friday afternoon. In it, he says former Knox County Commissioner, now trustee's office employee Diane Jordan discussed political strategy with a voter while she was on county time and well within the 100 foot no-campaigning boundary at East Knox County's Five Points Village voting center.

But that voter, a long time friend of Ezra Maize says their conversation has been misconstrued greatly.

"I saw Diane Jordan, we greeted each other and ended into a conversation," Chris Battle, a Knoxville pastor said. "That conversation ended into how the black community could better solidify our votes and be a stronger voice in the Knoxville community."

And re Rev. Maize's Knoxville seven-year residency, you better check your math against his website:

"In October 2005, Ezra accepted the position as senior pastor of First A.M.E. Zion Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. "

I attended the debate.
I found Maize to be pedantic, condescending and, well, kind of preachy. What I have observed of him is that he seems to think we, the voters owe him our attention. And having his name prefixed by "Rev" doesn't get him anywhere with me. I knew the Rev. Jerry Upton. But you'd have to have been here for more than 15 minutes to know what I'm talking about.

I'm still for Burchett, but I like McBath. He's genuine and he knows Knox County.

marytheprez's picture

WoW, all these insults from ms. Beanie Weenie!

No, you are correct. I do not know your style politics and do not want to learn how to be a condescending, elitist Rethug. In fact, I was encouraged at our KCDP Board of Directors meeting last week by a VERY WELL KNOWN African American LEADER in our Community that the Democratic Party here is to be commended for the work we have done to elect candidates with integrity, intelligence, honor and determination to work FOR Knoxville and Knox County. He also talked about those in Knox County politics who so embarrassed and humiliated our City and County in 2005 when they insisted on ignoring term limits and had to be kicked off the County Commission. Guess who one of them was?
And I know about my District 1. I grew up here. My grandfather, Papa John, raised 11 children on McCalla Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, and they all even lived on the Weigel's Farm during the War. And when you talk about ms. Jordan's 'delivering 500 votes with her 'influence', that may have been true years ago. But NO more. This latest instance of her ignoring Knox County Election laws just proves that she doesn't believe the laws apply to her.
I have worked in Democratic Politics all my adult life. And though I love and respect our Michael McBath for his honesty, courage, and determination, he does not have the leadership skills it will take to bring this County together, get over the 'problems of the past, or hire the most qualified people to help this area grow. And the reason Ezra Maize is called "reverend" is that he pastors a church in East Knoxville that has tripled in size since he was chosen Pastor. And you ought to visit one Sunday. His congregation would welcome you...anyway...in spite of your personal insults and derogatory snide comments. So before you continue to lob insults toward East Knoxville, you better do some research, lady. I could care less what crap you throw my way. But name calling, judgmental rhetoric won't help you as you promote your candidate by insulting others. Have a nice day.

KnoxCatLady's picture

Name calling?

Perhaps I didn't see the post to which you refer, but you seem to be the one name calling. Ms. beanie weenie?

You haven't the first fact to support your contention and while it is certainly nice you have picked a party to support, all I can discern from you as to why someone should support the Reverend Maize for Mayor is precisely because he is a pastor. In my opinion that no more qualifies him to be Mayor any more than being a pastor qualifies Pat Robertson to be President of the United States.

You say Michael McBath does not have the leadership skills to serve as Mayor and that is likely true, but I see nothing besides strident partisan rhetoric to indicate the Reverend Maize has any such skills either. Evidently you took bbeanster's own personal observations about the Reverend Maize's performance - - - and you made your own about Mr. McBath - - - as an attack of some kind on East Knoxville, which is preposterous. bbeanster did not attack East Knoxville and the Reverend Maize is not East Knoxville.

You simply blindly ignore every fact and hold forth, which seems to be all too common on this forum.

JHayes's picture

So What

I also live in the 1st District, and I find both of the candidates to be jokes. Apparently others do as well, seeing that combined, Maize and McBath have raised together only close to 600 dollars, while Hutchison and Burchett have raised over 200,000.. hmm.

marytheprez's picture

Raising the most money....hmmm

That is what Tennessee politics has always been about...according to that theory Bill Haslam should have a lock on the Governor's office. However, times are a'changing. In this County Mayor's race, Michael McBath is refusing ALL donations and claims he can win by paying for his campaign with his salary and personal visits with voters. Reverend Maize has stated that he will begin fund raising in earnest after the Primary.
And a tiny town in West Tennessee, Tracey City is proving that a candidate does not have to raise any money to win...or even be ALIVE! The winner, having been deceased for 3 weeks, was still declared the winner by over 200 votes! The incumbent must have been awful and didn't think she had to raise any money!
And being elected to public office has to do with leadership in the community (Ezra Maize elected twice as President of the NAACP of this area, Pastor, Social worker and mentor to kids and families at Austin East, creator of "A Second Chance" program for young people to find resources to succeed),integrity, honesty, dedication to the town, State and/or country. No, he doesn't have much money YET, but just wait. And he has the dedication, resources, and support of this community to win.
or "MONEY AIN'T EVERYTHING".

KnoxCatLady's picture

You are a partisan

You are a partisan and while it is good you are for a candidate, bbeanster requires no education from you. In fact, she's likely forgotten more than you know. And the half truths and gossip being repeated is your own as evidenced by the story on the television news tonight.

marytheprez's picture

What half-truths and what gossip

I do not 'half-lie' nor do I have to gossip. The voter, REVEREND Battle, while he admitted he spoke to ms. Jordan, seemed to think, after he went home from the polls and made his phone call, didn't seem to realize that even talking about "political strategy" at a polling place did not constitute a violation of our Election Law. He even stated that his action to report this violation was "overblown"...if so, why did he call Reverend Maize and complain?

Let me know what you consider as "gossip" so I can prove what I have reported here. And I would gladly debate anyone here since I have facts to prove what I have said and will say. In fact, this would be a great idea...having supporters of all our candidates debate each other about the positives of their candidates! Might generate more interest in what, to date, has been ALL about the '2 TIMs'.

Bird_dog's picture

I voted at 5P

and can report that
a) Diane Jordan was nowhere in sight
b) the polling place is so tiny, I don't think her hat would fit in there.

Bbeanster's picture

According to my sources, the

According to my sources, the Rev. Maize was in the East Knoxville satellite office twice on the day in question – once when he came in with the Rev. Battle and a second time when he returned to yell at Ms. Jordan.

Since he is a candidate, he's supposed to be abiding by the 100 foot rule, unless he is voting. It is my understanding that he says he was there to check on a car title, which is something he could easily have accomplished at the Knoxville Center office without a problem.

Looks like he violated state election law twice in one day.

p.s.:
Catlady, don't get lost. I kinda like your style :-)

marytheprez's picture

Your 'sources' are wrong

Reverend Maize did not go to the 5 Points polling place twice. After he received the call from the voter, he did go to 5 Points to advise ms. Jordan he was going to file a complaint about her violation of the law. If the Election Commission takes his complaint, it will be asking for witnesses to assert charges, unfounded, like this one.

marytheprez's picture

I made a mistake. I offer my apologies for one item in the blog

My mistake has to do with Candidate Maize visiting the offices at 5 Points twice on Friday. I spoke to him this afternoon. I was mistaken. He did visit that complex twice. The first time he came in to register a car he had purchased for his son. I am sure the records will reflect his registration of that car. He did say 'Hello' to the voter who later called to complain about the conversation with ms. Jordan. After registering the vehicle he looked up and saw the voter in ms. Jordan's office. So he left and later got the voter's call. And Candidate Maize did return to the offices, went to ms. Jordan's office and advised her that he had reported the complaint to her Boss, and was filing the Complaint with the Election Commission.
I apologize also to Ezra Maize since this was my mistake. Maybe this office and any other that also conducts voting on the premises should close the government offices on election days? Does this situation exist any other place in Knox County? Anyway, I am usually more alert to find the whole truth before I write...and the facts will come out if this becomes a legal issue.

KnoxCatLady's picture

Thank you bbeanster

Thank you bbeanster. I don't intend to get lost.

9

Anyone accustomed to reading 9's postings would already be well acclimated. The other lady did much the same in attacking bbeanster, simply from a different point of view and you yourself could try being civil.

Bbeanster's picture

So who has a 'legal

So who has a 'legal issue'?
Maize could have registered his car at East Town, which does not have a polling place. Since he lives in Holston Hills, it would have been as convenient to do it there as at Five Points, which is a tiny office. Why would he choose to go to a place where he would obviously be breaking the 100-foot law?
As a candidate, he is only allowed to go within 100 feet of a polling place one time, and that is to exercise his right to vote. They use the computer lab as a polling place at Five Points, and that whole office is far less than 100-feet wide, so he cannot legally walk in the door while he is running for office. He did it twice that day.
Also, are you the person who claims that Diane Jordan was taking people to the polls to vote for McCain? That also is untrue. It was reported in the News Sentinel at the time that she was considering changing parties, but said she would not do it because she wanted to campaign for Obama. I know that my conversations with her reflected that, and saying she was taking people to the polls to vote for McCain is crazytalk, as is your calling me a "Rethuglican," which I suppose means you are 'accusing' me of being a Republican. My Republican friends would get quite a laugh out of that.
But please don't accuse me of being a Democrat, either. I'm on record right here with my dislike of partisan politics.
