What: Beyond the Myth: Pit Bulls and Breed Discrimination (Bonus: chance to win a free pair of VIP tickets!)
When: Friday, September 3, 2010 - 7:00pm
Where: Bijou Theatre, Downtown Knoxville
This Friday at the Bijou, filmmaker Libby Sherril, who is from Knoxville, is hosting a premier screening of "Beyond the Myth," a feature-length documentary film about pit bulls and breed discrimination.
From the filmmaker: "Beyond the Myth is a film about pit bulls and those who love and defend the breed. It explores the contributing factors behind the public's generalized fear of pit bulls and examines the conflict existing between advocates and opponents of Breed Specific Legislation. It also investigates the myths associated with the breed and asks the question, 'What exactly is a pit bull?'"
Here's the trailer, and you can visit the website for more info.
EXTRA SPECIAL BONUS: Courtesy of Katie Allison Granju, who is helping promote the screening on a volunteer basis, KnoxViews has a pair of VIP tickets to give away. The free tickets will go to the seventh person who emails me (rneal@rviews.com) with the subject 'beyond the myth tickets'. (Winner will be determined by the email timestamp.)
The VIP package includes special seating, a goodie bag, and access to the VIP After Party at S&W Grand downtown, where singer/songwriter Kimber Cleveland, who wrote the theme song for the film, will be performing live.
UPDATE: Carla G. Welch is the lucky winner of the free VIP ticket package. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Is the Bijou going into indie screenings, or is this a special event?
Pit Boss
I'd like to recommend one of the most humane TV shows I've ever seen--"Pit Boss" on Animal Planet. The premise is about as unlikely as anything you've ever heard: a little-people talent-booking agency in Hollywood that doubles as a Pit Bull rescue.
IMHO, the show is a celebration of human decency and dignity, revealing human and animal bonding experiences that delight and amuse. Honestly, this old curmudgeon never finishes an episode without a tear in my eye.

I had a visit a couple of nights ago from a former coworker who was interested in a cheap website. At first he was terrified by my Miss Lulu greeting him at the door and then merely uneasy with her habit of always placing herself between any visitor and me here in the office.
When she went to sleep with her head on his foot, he decided that maybe she wasn't going to eat him after all. By the time he left, they were pretty good friends. I'll work on him and, by the time this job is done, I'll have him adopting a rescued Rottweiler.
