From the editor at the "other paper":
The answer is that we aren't covering up the stories, we just don't have them. Sometimes the Halls Shopper beats us on legitimate news. Other times, it publishes stories that don't meet our standards of verification or attribution.
He goes on to say that the Tyler Harber stories are "interesting" and "well written" but the KNS doesn't know if "they are fair and accurate, or even true."
The official response is that Tyler Harber is a "troubled young man." The local "real" media response is that the articles can't be trusted. Maybe so. But is it fair to suggest that the articles aren't "true"?
The way I read them, Betty Bean simply reports what Tyler Harber said, and relates it to events that are on the public record. Are they suggesting she made up the quotes or fabricated the interview? I'm sure that's not what he meant, but that's how it reads.
As for what Tyler Harber says, only Tyler Harber and a handful of others know whether it's "true", but I don't recall Betty Bean's articles drawing any conclusion one way or another.
You could, however, argue as Gene Patterson has that there is a definite spin to the articles. Not that there has ever been any spin whatsoever in any "real" local media reporting.
Whether or not there is anything to Harber's allegations, one thing is for sure: the Halls Shopper went out and got the story and reported it. The other local media didn't. Everything else sounds like sour grapes.
(Note, too, the irony of Jack McElroy's post just below the Halls Shopper post justifying the KNS decision to print confirmation of rumors that have been circulating about the private life of a popular local sports figure. Go figure.)

Truthiness
The KNS doesn't know if "they are fair and accurate, or even true."
That's funny: I have precisely the same reaction to every KNS story I read.
The Knoxville News Sentinel
The Knoxville News Sentinel would be a much better paper if Betty Bean wrote for it. The Sentinel could use some good investigative reporting. Betty did a great job with the Harber/Ragsdale story. I for one believe Tyler Harber is every bit as credible as Mike Ragsdale.
KNS coverage is lacking?
KNS coverage is lacking? Geez, didn't you read the political column yesterday? The most important story out there was that Herb Moncier didn't speak at last week's Supreme Court hearings. Thrilling insight.
Bean would ruffle some feathers, but it would be a must-read. No offense to the current writers, but isn't Bean why people still read the Ear to the Ground first in the Metro Pulse?
That'd Be Mike "Roy" Ragsdale, Chic Hic from Cleveland
In all honesty he doesn't want you to know that his middle name is Roy.
Sounds too blue collar for a white collar executive, running the premier governmental entity in the South. Way too important to run with the Roy moniker.
Sour grapes
Her interviews on Lloyd Daugherty's radio show left the same impression as the Halls Shopper series: she merely reported what he said and corroborated what she could.
You can download the three archived shows from this page (August 21, August 28, and September 5). It's a total of five freakin' hours, and I don't recall Betty ever concluding anything beyond "Tyler says."
I find it interesting that not one shred of evidence has been brought forth by Ragsdale or his apologists to rebut anything Harber has alleged.
Seems like solid journalism to me. "Spin" would be something more along the lines of "Tyler is a troubled young man and we hope he gets the help he needs." Or words to that effect.

See Whos Holding Options on East Knox Industrial Property
Somebody needs to wander out to East Knox County and see who all is holding options for the property where the county is hell bent on building a new industrial/business park. It's not about jobs, it's about putting a lot of public money in Ragsdale's closest supporters pockets.
Ask Ragsdale if he knows any of the individuals who hold options on the property the county is trying to acquire, he'll stare a hole through you and then say, I don't know what you are talking about.
Options Are a Secret
Even though John Valliant told County Commission that they are public record and he would give the option contracts to anyone who asked after John Mills asked to see them, Valliant has since said that Owings has opined that they are not public record after all and refused to show them. They know there will be an uproar when it is discovered that $500,000 of taxpayer money is going in real estate commissions, mostly to Pat Wood.
reporting
It seems like all involved waited until Ragsdale got elected to write more on this year and 1/2 old story so we would not have a Mayor Steve Hall. I agree with Fank Cagle that there should be a grand jury. More than Tyler, this whole boycotting Chase restaurants is weird. Stacey
