McDonald's, and just about every other server of coffee "cream", have gone over in the last few months to a new product marked "no refrigeration needed." According to the label, it contains milk, cream, datem, sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, sodium citrate and carrageenan. Datem, which I assumed comes from dates, is an acronym for Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, an emulsifier. Sounds like something I want to avoid. Tomato Head, on the other hand, offers organic cream with their coffee.

it's asceptic packaging
it's asceptic packaging combined w/Ultra High Temperature Pasteurization (UHT). we actually just started selling Organic shelf stable milk. stock up your bunkers. just because it's end times that doesn't mean you want to spend the apocalypse ingesting RBGH.
Unfortunately this is the
Unfortunately this is the way the industry is trending.
I work for a food service distributor and I would say 90% of the creamers I sell are "shelf stable". Doesn't matter if it's a fine dining restaurant or a nursing home, most people in the business are buying shelf stable items to avoid dings from the health department. It's a five point deduction for an out of temp item, so mayonnaise and creamers in particular are popular in this form because they are difficult to keep within the proper temp range.
I'm not condoning it...but that's just the way it is. I prefer my coffee black anyway.
Supersize Me!
I pretty much gave up McDonald's after I watched the documentary film "Supersize Me! (and later the drama film "Fast Food Nation")...
You guys really ought to wise up and follow Oprah's lead and ditch the coffee addiction...give up coffee and substitute your morning java beverage with green tea instead (St. Dalfour Organic Green Tea is my favorite; I add a little International Delights Amaretto flavoring and some Half 'n Half). Oprah had some medical doctor on her show swearing by the stuff for weight loss...seems that coffee contains some certain organic oils that interferes with the ability of the human bod to metabolize fat.
Coffee Negro with a twist
I learned to drink my coffee black with a twist of lemon when I lived in New Orleans. It's especially ggood with dessert.
Maple Grove
Maple Grove coffee at Northshore has some great selections and they serve it in a real cup with half and half. Imagine that. Its a real cozy little place to enjoy a cup of coffee and they don't sell cd's or write witty little sayings on their paper cups.
Do yourself a favor and
I bet that lady who spilled it in her lap a few years ago is glad she bought McCoffee.
I have a friend who has a stash of about five pounds of Jamaican Blue Mountain beans in his freezer. He bought it for ten dollars a pound when he was on the island. He brews it pretty strong but he then mixes a small amount of it with lots of sugar and hazelnut flavored creamer.
On the other hand another friend serves his coffee with Cognac. Who cares what kind of coffee he brews?

Do yourself a favor and
Do yourself a favor and avoid McDonald's coffee altogether. That stuff is nasty.
For years I would get a cup every now and then and when I started making it myself or getting it from other better sources, it made me realize just how bad that stuff really is.
It's REAL!
According to google, carrageenan is derived from seaweed. (*cough* soylent green! *cough*)
It still has the REAL® dairy seal on it, so it must be delicious... or made from "U.S. produced cow's milk dairy product components in which said component comprises at least 51% by weight of the content of the total product."
Yum.
There's also a new mayonnaise I've seen sitting on restaurant tables that apparently doesn't require refrigeration. The next time I'm in the mood for some crippling diarrhea I'm going to try it out.
black
After years of drinking coffee with cream and sugar, I've recently realized, as I slowly decreased the amount of both cream and sugar, that I like my coffee black. Also, I'm a bit surprised that corn syrup is not the first ingredient listed as it slowly invades every facet of our culinary existence.
