Police stop anti-war protest
Submitted by michael kaplan on Sun, 2008/04/27 - 11:12pm.
This from Bob Grimac: Knoxville Police today effectively shut down our peaceful, anti-war protest today by forcing us to take down all signs except the ones we were holding, at about 11:30 AM. They threatened to have my car towed, saying it was parked in a dangerous place, which was not true at all. The three of us protesting (myself, Rich Henigen, and a woman named Vivian), complied with the two officers, packed up our signs, and stayed for only another 30 minutes, completely soaked at that point anyway. This, our 48th Sunday protest, was the first to be harassed by police in such a manner (two years ago professor John Bohstedt was issued a citation for allegedly blocking traffic, something later dropped, I think). Since July 2005 when our Sunday vigils began, 100s of police cars have cruised on by and have ignored us. I have consulted with lawyer Carol Nickle, who participated in the As Carol said, "All the more reason to have more people there to hold signs!" Yes, if you would like to raise your voice against this immoral war of aggression, please join us on Sunday May 18, at our new summer hours, 9 AM until 1 PM. Your presence is especially needed on May 18 as I will be in Boston, attending a Tufts University graduation ceremony. Our signs will be at the corner of Kingston Pike and Concord, so please come hold one! Sunday, June 8 will be our 50th such action, and may be a good time to consider joining us on the streets, 9 to 1. On that date we will likely put our signs back on the street and see what happens. We certainly feel we have a right to free speech and that our signs are not obstructing pedestrian traffic, as the officer charged. Donations are also needed at this time to cover room rentals incurred this winter, and for Daily Beacon ads. Checks should be made to People for Peace, and sent to me at 3961 Greenleaf Ave., Knoxville, TN 37919. If everyone reading this sent a $5 donation, our bills would be paid. Thanks to all who supported us today with waves, words, and honks. Sincerely, |

He should have ridden his bicycle.
"Knoxville Police"? This tells us nothing.
I'd like to inform Mr. Bob Grimac that if he won't get the names of the officers involved and expose them there's not much in the way of pressure that can be applied.
When a cop violates your rights and harasses you, get the fucking name.
Can't get the names, but sure as hell can tell you the address to send a check.

Bob Grimac is one of Knoxville's most admirable people. He is politically aware, politically active, greener than you or I will ever be, gives his free time to helping people and teaching children, and is just about the nicest person you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting.
Your comment of "sure as hell can tell you the address to send a check" implies that he stands to profit from the donations and I don't appreciate the implication that he would misappropriate funds. Try trusting people and being positive instead of jumping to the conclusion that everyone is out to screw you over. There are more good people than bad; bad just gets better press. Have you ever stood in the rain to fight for a cause?

Yes. I have.
If you are going to plug for money, don't go on about police harassment. Cops harass lefties. Wow. News at 11. Just ask for the money. No need to cut to the doe-eyed kitten shot first.

Well, since I don't see a location for the protest, but I do see one for where to send contributions (which is fine, btw, I know it takes money to raise awareness) I think metulj has a point. I mean of course it's not about profit and I applaud Grimac's efforts. But y'know, there were three people and the cops made them move their car. Not exactly riot shields and fire hose abuse of authority. Move yr car and go back, yo.
EDIT: oops, re-read and noticed the location. Oh well. Still seems kinda like no big deal to me.
Makes you wonder what KPD would have done if they had been protesting abortion (or standing around waving American flags shouting God Bless 'merica!) instead of the war.
anti-abortion protesters had been demonstrating on that corner for years. i don't know whether they were harassed or not, but it's a good question ..
one wonders why the police waited 48 protests to begin their harassment .. i suspect someone must have complained.
Maybe it coincides with the Graham Crusade? Don't want any trouble from anti-war hippies and all...
Videotape helps, too. Hard to argue with living color that has a sound track.
Liberty and justice for all.

As cheap as videocameras are today you should have one rolling the whole time you are protesting.

3 people protesting the war. 1 person wandering around with an empty holster to protest the campus gun ban. Real restless lot over there on the hill. Wonder how many would turn out to protest the cancellation of American Idol?
BEst post of the day.

George W. Bush’s sentence-by-sentence speaking skills are deteriorating. Apparently, this may be due to a mental illness called “presenile dementia.” Bush may or may not be secretly still drinking heavily. Bush lied, and thousands of people died. Bush suffers from narcissism and megalomania. Moreover, Bush has been arrested three times. Bush was arrested for disorderly conduct. Bush was arrested for stealing. Bush was also arrested for a serious crime—driving under the influence of alcohol. There are reasons to believe that Bush suffers from a learning disability. Bush’s learning disability would explain a lot of things. All in all, Bush is a severely mentally ill individual. Bush is not fit to be the president of the United States.
