John McCain is a lucky recipient of Social Security benefits.

Last week, McCain said the system for funding Social Security is "a disgrace" because it forces young workers to pay into a program that is unlikely to benefit them in its current form.

Can you turn down SS benefits? If so, shouldn't he? I mean, he's very wealthy, isn't he? I'm sure there are a lot of us who could use those benefits when the time comes.

How lame. Obama calls

How lame.

Obama calls Washington politics dysfunctional. I guess we should expect him to turn down his senatorial salary (especially since he has been in presidential campaign mode since elected to the senate)

Good catch

Good catch bizgrrl!

Surely someone who has a sugar mama with hundreds of millions and several millions of his own doesn't need to be accepting money that comes out of my paycheck.
Lame, RedDog? Hardly! Do you like giving your money to someone so wealthy? And it is relevant because McCain says it's wrong, it's dysfunctional, for us to be paying for his Social Security check. He should not accept it.
I have a friend who repeats the right wing lies about SS and I keep telling him he doesn't have to accept the money. It's not a vested retirement plan but a pay-as-you-go contract between working Americans and retirees.
As a result of SS, the number of indigent elderly has fallen dramatically over the years. I don't think America really wants to go back to third world status when it comes to taking care of our elderly.
And, no, contrary to GOP talking points, SS is not in danger of immediate bankruptcy. The ONLY thing hurting SS is Bush's gigantic budget deficits, the same thing hurting our economy and the value of our dollar. Borrowing sucks but the party of "fiscal responsibility" can't seem to get a grip on how that's true, even for them.
We certainly don't want to allow the GOP to put SS funds into the "market" so their corrupt corporate friends can squander it.
Leave SS alone. Balance the budget. Address health care. Follow Gore's energy plan. Create good jobs for Americans. Build up passenger rail infrastructure, local light and high-speed long distance. More and better Dems.
