If you've not heard, Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich is in custody on corruption charges that include, basically, trying to trade an appointment to President-Elect Obama's Senate seat for political favors.

The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza has some "highlights" from the indictment.

Sometimes, its hard to decide which state produces "better" political corruption, Illinois or Louisiana. Louisiana has a tendency towards more flamboyancy in their corruption, at least.

I am shocked, shocked I tell you...

This is all wrong. Governor Rod Blagojevich DID read to children.

How can this be? Has reading to children lost its magic powers?

The Governor of Illinois recently announced plans to adopt entertainment superstar Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Program in his state. Illinois becomes the first state government led effort to provide books to all preschool children.

A recent study conducted by High/Scope Educational Research Foundation documents the success of the Imagination Library's program. The study--Literacy Outcomes and the Household Literacy Environment: An Evaluation of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library--indicates that "parents overwhelmingly report that Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program is

-- effective at increasing time spent reading with children,

-- making children more interested in books,

-- making parents more comfortable reading to children,

-- increasing parent awareness of their children's reading levels."

DECEMBER 9--The criminal complaint filed today against Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich contains a remarkable section detailing the Democratic politician's alleged attempt to cash in on his ability to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

Attached to the U.S. District Court complaint is an FBI affidavit, excerpted below, alleging that Blagojevich was caught on wiretaps noting that the Senate seat "is a fucking valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing." He was also recorded saying that unless "I get something real good," he would appoint himself to the vacancy. "I'm going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain. You hear what I'm saying. And if I don't get what I want and I'm not satisfied with it, then I'll just take the Senate seat myself."

According to surreptitiously recorded conversations, Blagojevich spoke with associates about the possibility of trading the Senate post for either an ambassadorship or a Cabinet post. The politician, according to the affidavit sworn by FBI Agent Daniel Cain, "analogized his situation to that of a sports agent shopping a potential free agent to various teams." During a wiretapped November 10 call, a frustrated and financially strapped Blagojevich referred to Obama as a "motherfucker" and said that he would not appoint an ally of the President-elect to the Senate vacancy if "I don't get anything." Referring to Obama, Blagojevich exclaimed, "Fuck him. For nothing? Fuck him."

In a November 11 conversation, Blagojevich remarked that he knew Obama wanted Valerie Jarrett, a longtime confidante, to succeed him, "but they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. Fuck them."

I was in my car late this

I was in my car late this afternoon, and tuned in to Phil Williams' talkshow. Catherine Howell was filling in for Williams, but she picked up the Hallerin/Phil torch of stupidity and ran with it. She admitted she knew "nothing" about the situation, but kept insinuating that Obama was somehow involved -- used the word "fishy" while I was listening.

When one guy challenged her and said that her blather made him wonder if he can trust her as a "news" person, she got real defensive and said that all she was doing to day was a talkshow -- not news, and she repeated her disclaimer that she didn't know what she was talking about -- as if that excused her.

Pretty disappointing. Evidently part of the WNOX job description is checking one's brain at the door. And pandering. Lots of pandering.

Well, how long did it take for the Elves to bring forth the prosecution on Whitewater?

This may well breathe new life into the hunt for a smoking gun between Blago and Obama (perhaps in the person of one Antoin Rezko).

Not saying I agree. But you can't say that there's no precedent for using innuendo to hound a legitimate president out of office, either. Buckle up... gonna be a long ride.

That's unfortunate.

Catherine is much smarter than that. She needs to find a place to work that can better utilize her intellect. WNOX clearly is not the place. I missed the episode, but I'm sorry to hear she went down that road.

They all do it on WNOX. It is more than pandering. It is their format.

What they do is try to go four corners and burn the clock. The goal is to make sure they control the content from the callers. First step is to make sure only callers that play ball get on the air. One or two useful idiots in the opposition are fine but they had to have the country accent and sound pretty stupid. No callers of the opposing viewpoint that sound intelligent are allowed on the air.

A normal talk show has about a 65/35 split of time with the host talking most of the time. WNOX has a 80/20 ratio. It isn't entertaining to listen to. Long bloviating from the host with agreement from the guests. Little dissension or debate of any kind. The only fun is when someone calls them on the scam and they have to defend themselves and WNOX.

Howell is unique. There is something about her style that is irritating even beyond Hallerin's standard. An almost narcissistic superiority with a sickly sweet delivery. It is tough do decide who of Hallerin, Phil, and Howell is the most unlistenable. I have to go with Phil. But Howell is close.

That's the damn truth.

In 1991, Edwin Edwards ran against the infamous David Duke for governor of Louisiana. Edwards (now in prison) had a long, storied history of both corruption and womanizing. During the campaign, a reporter asked Edwards about a comment from Duke (the white supremacist) criticizing his dubious moral character and the stories of his notorious philandering.

Delivering one of my favorite political quotes of all time, Edwards replied, "David Duke and I have one thing in common: we're both wizards under the sheets."

He won the election.

Got to love one party control...

I don't care if it's Democrat or Republican in the U.S. or Labour or Conservative in the UK, or any other single party in any other nation, if one party holds the reins of power for too long, things always descend into this kind of BS. Machines require lubrication, and with political machines, the grease is graft.
