Give Mr. BH a break. He's a suffering conservative and obviously guilty of WWR (writing while republican), hence the accusations of "others" being tabloid journalists, violating "journalistic ethics" and so on. (and anyway, wouldn't "tabloid journalist" be a contradiction in terms, Ms. B?)

It is possile that someone close to BH will try to perform an intervention, and it is remotely possible that he can be helped. I suggest we look to see when he starts writing in complete sentences as an early indication of one of the steps in his program. Then we can watch for actual "facts" appearing in his sentences, and finally, he will start being nice.

At that point we can forgive him or offer him a beer or something.

This is as good a time as any...

A question was asked to former radio host Kelvin Moxley on the Steve Hall television program last Friday and also Sunday on the Hubert Smith radio program on AM 850. The question was, "Was AM 1180 bought out to put you and Lloyd Daughterty off the air and did Mayor Mike Ragsdale have anything to do with this?"

Mr. Moxley replied he could not confirm or deny the question and had no comment at the time.

There is a strange convergence in the political force. Current GOP Chair Brian Hornback now has FIVE blogs targeted to Betty Bean and Sandra Clark. Four of which appear to be very questionable as they use without permission Betty and Sandra's names with two others using the name of the Halls Shopper News. Expect a short half life for all of these.

In other political convergence news, very conservative blogger Terry Frank and her husband Lee have just signed with Horne Radio to do a five day a week radio program from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM that may feature very conservative bloggers David Oatney and Brian Hornback. This is unconfirmed but not unlikely. GOP Chair Hornback is a devoted supporter of the County Mayor yet David Oatney is a major detractor. Both are friends. Strange bedfellows indeed. The program begins March 12.

It just gets curiouser and curiouser. Local conservative talk radio is getting ready to take a hard right turn. The return of Lloyd Daughtery is uncertain at this time. Mr. Daugherty commented on Gene Patterson's television program it could be a matter of days.

An aside...

In a quick (but off-topic) observation, I noticed another interesting comment on Brian's Blog.

Apparently, he attended the recent Farragut community meeting organized to discuss zoning issues relating to the new Hardin Valley High School.

Brian appears to endorse the notion that the new high school should become a new Farragut Middle, instead. He notes that the current Farragut Middle facility could become home to Farragut High's 9th and 10th grade population, while the existing Farragut High could house only the 11th and 12th grade students (lots of logistical problems here, but I'll not digress even further).

Wasn't this notion of a new west Knox County high school promoted in part to relieve overcrowding at Bearden High and Karns High, as well? These folks really *do* think they operate their own independent school system!

Pamela Treacy's picture

Yes, we thought it was

Yes, we thought it was supposed to relieve overcrowding at karns, bearden, farragut and even west high school according to the original memo that recommended a new high school be built. The last proposed HVHS zone from the school board did not rezone any current Bearden students to HVHS. The only Karns students rezoned to HVHS were those living in what is called Hardin Valley. The school board did not do adequate research on the growth in the southwest quadrant of knox county. The same data that suggested relief was needed at four high schools, now suggests all the growth is coming south of interstate 40 and west of pellissippi.

We are spending $40 million+ of taxpayers dollars to elivate overcrowding in one community by building a school in another community. If Halls was overcrowded would you build the new school in the Powell community? That is what is being done. People don't seem to know the Town of Farragut boundaries or the high school zone. About half the population of Farragut High School lives in the Town of Farragut, the other resides in Knox County. Both areas consider themselves the Farragut community because life is centered around the schools --like other parts of the county. The high school should have been built in the northshore and pellissippi area -- the area with the most growth. The school board voted to put the school in the wrong location -- again our tax dollars at work. Most people will at least double the distance they travel to get to school. Some will travel four times the distance they drove to FHS. A small group of children who currently attend school together from kindergarten to 8th grade will be a small minority at their new high school. The whole Knox County school zones take little into consideration of managing feeder schools and keeping children together through high school. For example, Northwest middle school serves multiple high schools. This is not good for students. Other concerns include inexperienced teenagers driving on accident ridden Pellissippi Parkway or down Watt Road with all the trucks. Do you need more?

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Hardin Valley High School

(Confused on-lookers: PT, whose comments are above, has responded to a quick aside I made on this thread, many posts back. I'll reply, then bow out.)

PT: "Do you need more?"

Well, I guess so. I've read your post through twice, and all I'm grasping is that you believe your community is entitled to utilize *all* of a $40+ million facility intended to relieve overcrowding for four school communities.

You ask, rhetorically, "if Halls was overcrowded would you build the new school in the Powell community?" I don't know where I'd build it, but I certainly wouldn't build it in Halls--it's overcrowded, remember? Farragut already has a primary/intermediate school serving 2000 children--does your community want a high school to serve 4000, too? Or does your community just want two high schools serving 2000 each? That wasn't the plan pitched to the rest of us.

You appear frustrated that "people don't seem to know the Town of Farragut boundaries or the high school zone." But I would think that the Town of Farragut boundary is irrelevant WRT a new school intended to serve Farragut *and* all these other communities--who knows where the Bearden, Karns, or West communities consider their boundaries to be, either? And the Farragut high school zone, obviously, is obsolete with the opening of the new school, so why would that be relevant?

You maintain that "most people will at least double the distance they travel to get to school," but isn't that because FHS had way too many students in attendence to begin with? You refer, in fact, to that half of the population outside of Farragut but within Knox County (and Farragut, BTW, is also in Knox County). Is this the "suburban Farragut suburb" population that you seek to keep intact? Why? Isn't it a given that some persons rezoned will need to drive further than they had before, as are those families you cite who are living in Hardin Valley and presently attending Karns? In every school zone, *someone* lives on the fringe of the zone.

And as for Northwest Middle School serving multiple high schools, that's not the exception, it's the general rule--especially in the suburbs. Either students from a given elementary school are routed on to one of two different middle schools, or students from a given middle school are routed on to one of two different high schools. With the exception of Farragut High, most of our high schools serve only around 1200 students, so how many Knox County students do you imagine attend school together from kindergarten through their senior years? Outside of Farragut, not many.

I understand that rezoning doesn't break up just schools, but also school communities, and I do feel the same way about my school community--while it lasts. Still, it was never the intention of Knox County taxpayers that this high school, so difficult to fund, should serve just Farragut. I don't believe other communities will allow that outcome, and, frankly, I don't like the notion, myself.

(P.S.--My 5th grader lives closer to Karns Elementary than to Powell Elementary, too, yet he is zoned for Powell.)

Pamela Treacy's picture

Tamara, we are saying the

Tamara, we are saying the same thing.

No we didn't think our community needed a $40 million dollar high school, but that is what the MPC and KCSB is now telling us.

Everyone was told that the new high school was being built to relieve overcrowding at four schools. But when the zone came out, the only students moved from Bearden, Karns or West were the 350 students from Karns who live in Hardin Valley. The rest of the students are coming from Farragut High School zone.

Now MPC says the growth is primarily in the area west of pellissippi and south of interstate 40. This is why we don't trust MPC numbers. When the decision was made, the growth was effecting all FOUR high schools.

This is why the community is in shock that in order to populate HVHS they suggested taking up to 800 students out of Farragut. That is more than the number needed to relieve overcrowding. You might remember last August that the county commission and school board requested funding to build the school for 2100 students. Mayor Ragsdale suggested to build it for fewer students, which would have saved $6 million dollars which could have been used on other county projects.

I hope this makes more sense. I would be happy to talk with you in detail. I am not trying to be argumentative. I just want to get the information out to people who care about Knox County and how are many is spent. This could happen in other areas.

Identity Theft

"Actually, it looks like identity theft/cyberstalking."

This is far from Identify Theft or Cyber Stalking. There might be some argument made for a Top Level Domain (blogspot.com) if it could be proven that the contents of the site were harmful and caused some sort of damage or were defaming to the named person/company in the URL (consider aolsucks.org).

On a subdomain (anything.blogspot.com) and in particular on one like blogger's, which garauntees nothing of the contents of the publishers who use blogger, there isn't much that can be done.

If BB was a nationally recognized writer I could understand somebody wanting to hold the domain or subdomain, but since she isn't I can't really understand why he would want them (although I'm sure he has a reason).

If I were you BB I would take this as a compliment that someone thinks highly enough of you to hang on to a subdomain of your name.

I agree!

Being a democrat in his church can be well a bit of a hard road at times and you are right about his feelings concerning women in the Baptist world, but I was just trying to say his church is much bigger than him and a few of us are trying to let him know it.

As you know (from your story) the hard part about being Baptist is they use the church as a platform to nail other faiths and he is no exception. He has preached openly about the sin of women taking up the so called cloth and it goes back to his tired belief that women are to follow and men are the ONES they follow. He has scripture to back him up but as everyone knows the bible is filled with easily turned verse that can work beautifully with any idea.

No, I agree with you 100%!! I was just saying we love the people there and our children all have classmates there. Those are the reasons (ok I do shop at Turkey Creek) we attend.

Fountain City has beautiful churches I just wish they could get the youth to attend?

LadyVols,

Take a stop some Sunday on your way west at Central Baptist Bearden (the big one across from Krispy Kreme, near Kingston Pike and Papermill Road). You might find some things you like. Not as much of a production as FBC Concord and much more moderate as Baptists go, but generally traditional in faith and a very big/active youth group. We're a notch below Concord and Cedar Springs in size, but still pretty large.

I usher and greet each Sunday. Come by sometime.

LadyVols's picture

Thanks!

It is a great looking church and we just might drop in. Unlike my younger days, we like to visit and although we did move our letter to FBC we keep an open mind.

As for the Baptists, I grew up in the church...love the music and have always found great fellowship with those folks. But like I said earlier it is VERY hard to find a democrat teaching Sunday School!

I can't understand why Fountain City has such elderly church members, what happened to all their children? Did they grow up and move out west? We tried very hard in this neck of the woods to find a church and when we were the youngest there (and yes we have two teenagers) we just starting going out west.

My friend who sells homes always shows west to families moving to Knoxville, pushing the schools and the shopping. I guess that is why the only new blood in this end is way out in Halls?

Anyway, thank you for the invite and we will sure take you up on the visit!

Yep; that and the advent of the mega-church. There simply isn't room to put one of those huge mega-churches in Fountain City and that's what a lot of folks seem to want today. Not all mind you, but a lot of church-goers like the anonymity of a mega-church where not everyone knows everybody and you don't have to feel guilty if you don't participate in the volunteerism efforts of the church because nobody really recognizes you. Cynical I know, but that is the overall feel I have found at SOOOOOOO many mega-churches that I have tried out. I figure I can talk to my Maker anytime, anywhere, and in places that are a WHOLE lot nicer than a gigantic building that has no heart or soul (and I do apologize, but that is what I feel has become of the Church in America for many years past now; lots of the trappings of faith, none of the reality).

And I probably wouldn't be welcome in the church after I stood up and shouted at the preacher for his neanderthal attitudes towards women.

Other women then joined in and created a pretty good din. I can't say that the men were much receptive to my comments.

This church thread has the potential to get out of hand. As a former Southern Baptist, I'm well aware that there is a pretty big division within the church between the moderates and the fundamentalists. There are both moderate (e.g.,Central Bearden, First Baptist downtown) and fundamentalist (e.g., Central Concord, Sevier Heights) congregations in Knox County. So a person looking for a Baptist church should be able to find one to his/her liking.

I don't think Democrat or Republican or Green should be brought into church life myself. However, it's hard for me not to bristle sometimes - for example, like when a friend of mine who attends one of the local fundamentalist Baptist churches told me that the pastor said from the pulpit in 2004 that good Christians don't vote for Democrats.

Carter & SBC

Dunno if your question was directed to me or to Ladyvol, KTB, but my comment was a tongue-in-cheek reference to Jimmy Carter's very real letter to his Baptist church (a SBC member-church) about five years back in which he resigned his position as a nationally-acclaimed Sunday School teacher. The letter, signed by Jimmy and Rosalyn both, cited differences in scriptural interpretation WRT the proper role of women in the church and in society generally.

I'll hush now--these comments have nothing to do with the subject of this thread--that Brian Hornback is mad at Bean.

"Easy: One would talk about Jesus' ministry as an example of perfect social justice. The other would emphasize the Old Testament and hand out a "voter's guide.""

Wow! Can you provide a list of churches metulj where you found this to be true? I need to know what churches to avoid in the future.

My Apologies

"This church thread has the potential to get out of hand."

You are right and I'll apologize for my part in the off topic conversation. No more from me on this thread.

I was going to post this on

I was going to post this on Brian H's blog, but considering all posts have to be pre-approved and the fact that he doesn't allow anonymous postings I felt he was trying to draw me out of my anonymity. I figured he would read the post here anyway. Randy feel free to delete this comment if you would like. Brian, if it is ok with Randy, feel free to post this yourself, in your comments.

Brian the reason I posted what I did on the other website(knoxviews) was because I was having the discussion with them. Besides I hardly ever post on any other website, and for different reasons. For One, on many blogs, it is a hassle to register before you post, and for some blogs, I have attempted to post, but receive a notice saying, 'No postings are being accepted at this time'. So I pretty much quit trying to post anywhere other than the other local Blog (knoxviews).

As far as my comment! I don't understand why my statement had you and Walker so steamed. If he really was, as I stated in the comment, a seasoned journalist. A comment from a nobody such as myself, should have been viewed as nothing more than a fly on the back of a rhino. A nuisance maybe, but nothing to take note of. Heck, even the Beanster knows better than to comment on anything I write. It would dumbify her! The fact that you and Walker acknowledged it and even mentioned it, makes me wonder if my original question were true. So I guess what I am trying to say is, next time try not being so defensive and if you are indeed reporting, then just report.

Brian, I have nothing personal against you, I don't even know you, so it wouldn't be fair for me to judge you. I do know Walker, and as I said a couple of times on the other blog (knoxviews), I like him personally, and would even consider him a distant friend, and I would like to believe it would be likewise for him, but during the last senatorial campaign, it did appear that he was trying to disrupt the knoxviews community, and that was the reason for him being banned. Was he doing journalism or was he trolling?

Have a good evening,
JaHu
