Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat, recommended in a memo that staffers get immunized before visiting NASCAR races in The South.
the staffers' itinerary for the Talladega race shows the only medical facilities they toured were a mobile emergency hospital with no patients present and stations for minor first-aid.
On the other hand, maybe fear will keep everyone away from our Southern paradise. Nah, I doubt it. We can try though. It really sucks down South. We got heat, humidity, big bugs, deadly waterways, swamps (versus bogs and marshes), and fat people. Stay away, very far away. It is dangerous down here.

That link is the Rev. Myung Sun Moon's paper. When this was first reported, the immunizations were said to be recommended because the delegation was to visit hospitals where getting such shots ahead of time is just SOP.
Maybe that's not all there was to the way it unfolded, but it sure looks like it was spun by the GOP noise machine.

Hey, I could have picked a different source. I agree it was spun by the GOP, but hey, come on, getting immunized to go to Talladega? I say they should have recommended a translation guide instead.
A Mississippi Rep said this?
Has he ever lived in the state he represents?
Now the rest of the story.
I posted this comment about the same time factchecker posted. It now seems he made the correct decision.

Funny, virtually every search result I get from googling this episode (and I've been at it for a while now) is either to the single AP story that tells both sides without any in depth coverage or "fact-checking," or they are to southern newspapers just angling to the NASCAR outrage. And a few hits to sites like GOPUSA, freep, etc. Wonder what they have to say about it.
