Two government civil rights
Two government civil rights lawyers who spoke out about the Trump administration’s efforts to limit enforcement of the Fair Housing Act were removed from their posts on Monday morning. The lawyers, Palmer Heenan and Paul Osedebe, said they were escorted out of the Housing and Urban Development Department by administration staff.
On Tuesday, two members of Congress — Maxine Waters, Democrat of California, and Elizabeth Warren, the ranking Democrat on the Senate committee responsible for overseeing HUD — called for Senate hearings to examine allegations against leadership at the housing agency, and for the HUD secretary, Scott Turner, to be ordered to testify before Congress to respond to claims that the department was violating the law.
