Before I offer my thoughts on who should get your vote and why, here is the basic information about when and where to vote:

If you are not sure which voting district you should be voting in check here

Early voting ends on April 27th

Early voting locations are listed here

If you’re not voting early, the Primary election will be held on May 2nd

Voting locations are listed here

My recommendations in both the Democratic and Republican primaries appear after the jump...

If you’re voting in the Democratic Primary, my suggestions for candidates that deserve your vote include:

Sheriff: Randy Tyree (write-in)

In the event that Sheriff Hutchison is unable to serve a 5th term, we need a candidate to face the Republican replacement candidate, who will surely be handpicked by the Sheriff. Write in Randy Tyree.

Chancery Court Judge: Jim Andrews (write-in)

Mr. Andrews is a highly competent lawyer and solid judicial candidate. Andrews came within a couple of thousand votes in his bid to be Sheriff last election. If Andrews gets sufficient votes to be placed on the General Election ballot in August, he would face Mike Moyers. Moyers is the current County law director and is responsible, in my opinion, for allowing the term limits issue to lie dormant for too long, leaving us in our current mess. By his inaction he failed to bring an important legal issue to a timely resolution. Write in Jim Andrews.

Criminal Court Judge, Div II: Ken Irvine

Ken is a personal friend of mine but more importantly one of the best legal minds I have known. He’s been a prosecutor, appeals court law clerk, high dollar defense lawyer AND a public defender. Fair minded and firm, Ken would bring these attributes to the responsibilities of criminal court judge.

County Commission:

1A: Stephen Dupree (write-in)

A gadfly of the first order. Commission needs the irreverence and vigilance Steve Dupree would bring to the County’s business. Write in Dupree.

2B: Jonathan Wimmer (write-in)

An active member of the community, Wimmer would replace a term limited commission member on the General Election ballot if he receives enough votes. Write in Wimmer.

2A: Mark Harmon

3B: Colvin Idol (write-in)

Idol’s probably best known as a radio personality from the glory days of Rock 104. He’s since been active in the community as a fund raiser for good causes like the Sexual Abuse Assault Crisis Center and PBS. He would face Ivan Harmon if he receives enough write ins. Harmon is the Commissioner that we can thank for the last introduction of “God is the foundation of our Country” resolution. Merits of the resolution aside, it’s not the sort of controversial fight that Commission needs to spend time on.  Write in Colvin Idol.

If you’re voting in the Republican Primary, my suggestions for candidates that deserve your vote include:

Public Defender: Mark Stephens

Though he’s running unopposed, Mark is the best defender we could hope for in his position as Public Defender and he is doing a nearly thankless job. Vote for him simply as a show of appreciation for doing a difficult and necessary service for the community.

County Executive: Mike Ragsdale

Ragsdale has done a satisfactory job in the last four years. Steve Hall, who just ran for re-election to City Council a short few months ago, is a basic aginner with few positive ideas for Knox County.

General Sessions Court Judge: Andrew Jackson VI

I have been on the other side of the courtroom against Andy Jackson since I began as a criminal defense attorney 15 years ago. He’s fair and efficient in his dealings. I’ve never observed him “giving a case away” or being harsh beyond what was deserved in a case because of politics or personal favor. He has experience above his opponents and integrity to be impartial if elected Sessions Court Judge.

County Commission seat 7A: James McMillan

Mary Lou Horner is term limited. A vote for McMillan, the farmer that faced off County Commission on stormwater issues, is a vote for integrity and common sense.

County Commission 9: David Kiger

Pinkston, the incumbent opponent, is a classic aginner who voted down the rehabilitation of a historic South Knoxville school for no good reason. After he killed the deal, which was years in the works, he forced a second bid to go out. The result, no takers. No one wants to do business with arbitrary government and Pinkston exemplifies that in a district that needs some leadership, especially as the waterfront projects take off in the next few years.

Democrats

If the Democrats go to  caucuses to nominate canidates,do folks support open caucuses held in the County Commission District that the nominee is running in?

rikki's picture

open?

Open to whom? That sounds like something easier said than done.

Are you still on about this Bill?

Two things:

1) There will be no district caucuses.  The Knox County Democratic Party will be holding a special meeting of the Executive Committee at some point soon after May 2.  We just had a meeting last Thursday and there were no nominations to fill vacant ward/precinct chair positions.  Again, it's a simple question... Why should someone be given a say on this important issue when they can't be bothered to actually show up and work for the party when it's not interesting?

2) Amy Broyles is a friend and has been a hard worker for the party and for most every campaign in this county for a long time.  She's not only active in her own neighborhood but in several others in the 2nd district.  The only relevent experience where I'd give Wimmer an edge would be his job experience. Overall though, I'd recommend Amy.  Don't get me wrong, Wimmer seems very nice and would do a good job.  It's just that if you're going to choose, use valid reasons.

easier said...than done

Easier said:At the special called meeting,of the Democratic Executive Committee,if a motion is brought to the floor to conduct open caucuces in the county commission districts & that motion passes;the Party will conduct open district caucuces...Than done:1. A committee member must make the motion. 2.A committee member must 2nd the motion. 3.70 committee members gotta vote for the motion....It's a tough row to hoe...but I believe it's the right thing to do.

open to whom?

Open to whom?As the Mysterians used to say...good ?.I know alot of members of the Executive Committee disagree with me;but my thought is;who ever shows up.

Bill Young's picture

We had to destroy the Village ...in order to save it.

It seams to me,in the open caucus debate, some are saying:"We had to close the caucus down...in order to open the Party up."

rikki's picture

who ever shows

who ever shows up

Republicans? People who live in Blount Co? People bused over from North Carolina and given a free meal at Cracker Barrel?

Bill Young's picture

who ever shows up

Point well made. I appreciate the opinion of those that disagree.Fact is,I understand that a "who ever shows up" rule, will not happen. So we move to the next step...One idea is to conduct caucuces the way we used to elect Party chairs....have a qualifacation caucus 2 days before the district caucus...Form a credentials committe for the district caucus...then if there are challenges to the seating of a delagate to the district caucus;that challenge would go before the Credentials committee.

Truman Day dinner

So if the dinner tanks (like discussed in the News Sentinel today), and there's a financial loss, isn't that going to throw a kink in the works where the Knox Co. Democratic party was going to give its Knox County Commission candidates some nice donations?

That'll leave lots of D candidates behind financially, right out of the gate.

certified vs write-in ?

I notice in at least one race, 2nd District, Seat A has a "certified challenger" and a write-in with the same party affiliation (Democrat).

I don't get it, doesn't a certified challenger (Harmon in this case) have a lock no matter how many votes a write-in might get? Couldn't the active party wishes be subverted by an outsider, or does it always fall to the discretion of the party in the final decision?

rikki's picture

justifiable confusion

You are right to be confused by that one. It makes no sense. The parties only get to replace incumbents who are declared ineligible, not challengers who have never served.

spintrep's picture

certified challenger

What is most unclear to me...

Does the party have a role or commitment to candidates in the "certified challenger" part or is that just a term the election commission uses?

bill young's picture

certified

To be placed on the ballot,in the county primary election;for County Commission,a candidate must have filed a petition...with the Election Commission... with 25 registered voters that vote in that County Commission district...by noon Feb.16th...Mark Harmon did that;therefore,Harmon was certified to be placed on the Democratic Primary ballot...Mr.Steffaniak did not do that...he qualified turning in an intent to run as a write-in form to the election commission by 6:00pm April 12th.Whoever gets the most votes in the 2-A Democratic Primary wins.I could well be all wrong on this.

Paul Witt's picture

You have it right Bill.

You have it right Bill.  Mr. Steffaniak is running against Mark Harmon in the primary and whoever gets the most votes is on the ballot for August.

If something were to happen to the winner between May 2 and 40 days before the August general election, I'm not sure how that would be handled. I suspect it would be handled the same way as the current situation with the 3 term-limited Democrats on the May 2 ballot.
