As you're probably aware, photos have been published in a British tabloid of Olympic super Michael Phelps, to put it bluntly, taking a bong hit.
Here's several Washington Post columnists on the issue, all of which argue "God, this is so stupid."
- John Feinstein
- Sally Jenkins (especially worthwhile for her "not that I ever..." tone)
- Kathleen Parker (note that the Sheriff of the county where the photo was
tokin'taken wants to prosecute Phelps)
And a valid point:
Don't screw up with cameras around if you have endorsement contracts

snowboarder on msnbc
I saw the snowboarder gold medalist who was busted for pot on MSNBC making the case for athletes using pot, instead of alcohol, when they want to party in an altered state.
No fat, no hangover, less damage to your body in general. The classic "lesser of two evils" argument.
Of course the next talking head comes on and says "Its not the lesser of two evils.... Its terrible for you, its a gateway drug, etc."
I think the snowboarder dude was about to counter with the "No one has ever died overdosing on pot" factoid, quickly followed by the "20,000 people die in the US every year from alcohol related causes" factoid, but the whole discussion got cut off.
Frankly I'm surprised Phelps was smoking it.
I would have thought a health conscious athlete would be eating it or vaporizing.
Not that I know ANYTHING about all that.

who cares.
Who Cares?
His parents would be a likely answer.
Legalize It!
It would be great if he joined NORML.
I'm pretty sure smoking pot
I'm pretty sure smoking pot gave him no edge on winning. In fact, I would suggest he had to work extra hard to win. Pot, the unmotivator. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
On the other paw...
... his training gave him the lung capacity to take massive hits.

cereal
Kellogs missed a chance to have some fun with a stoned Phelps pigging out in the commercials, perhaps they could have put the newly "overweight" Jessica Simpson in there with him. In seriousness, Kathleen Parker sounded better than most liberals in talking in her column about the silliness of our drug laws. BTW, you can actually buy Hempmilk and hemp cereal, the hemp in the food just can't be grown in the US, due to our laws. For what ever reason the Felini Krogers doesn't carry it, but I've seen the stuff at South and West Knox Krogers, its actually very nutritious.
Well
I guess this explains why he eats so much lol
Oh good grief. I'll bet at
Oh good grief. I'll bet at least 75% of all Americans couldn't care less.
Who cares!!!!
DOnt worry about it dude pots not that bad live your life how you wanan live it, a little bud never hurt anyone! So you fags out their that are making a huge deal about it, I have one thing to say...SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU HOMO'S!
Our drug laws are silly.
For all this talk about how silly this is, and who could care less, we still have a repressive array of drug laws that make sure that our law enforcement community cares a whole lot.
If Phelps had been busted for pot at the wrong place and the wrong time in his life, he might never have won those 8 gold medals, and never inspired me to do those extra few laps at the pool.
Our drug laws are silly.

Aaaack! The info is probably valid. But, hey, quoting Dr. Gupta? Puhleese...
Not to promote pot, my guess is a person probably smokes a lot less doobies in a day than does someone who smokes cigarettes.
Michael Phelps
I have no opinion on marijuana. It is what it is.
What I don't understand is why folks haven't gotten up in arms about some of Phelps other post Olympics behavoir, such as excessive gambling and dating a striper.
He's clearly let loose to party. He probably deserves to let go of some of the discipline involved in getting to win so many Olympics. But I'm not impressed by some of his choices, marijuana or no.
