Damn.

This is awful. It was a constituent event. The newpaper's website appears to be overloaded. Here's an NPR report:

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot In Arizona : NPR:

The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

Several other people were shot.

This guy is just as likely to have read the article in The Daily Kos earlier this week "My Congresswoman voted against Nancy Pelosi. And is now dead to me". (since removed) You can't put it all on one side.
This guy will turn out to be as nutty as Hinckley.

You can't put it all on one side.

No, you can't, because there is too much. What you can do is put each piece where it belongs, then step back and see that there is far more eliminationist rhetoric on the right, including prominent, mainstream Republicans, and far more victims on the left.

If you think some desperate scrap from Daily Kos balances out an actual shooting with multiple fatalities, your sense of balance is broken, badly.

Disgusting.

Good for her

The rush to score political points out of this tragedy is what is disgusting.

The maniacal obsession with Palin, on the other hand, continues to amuse. I mean, seriously, how quickly was that stupid target board posted to knoxviews once the poster learned of the tragedy ?

That's just stupid.
"You're dead to me" is an old, brutal figure of speech. Do you think cutting you dead means I stabbed you?
Or that knocking your block off means i beheaded you?
This guy is not a garden variety loon. He's a loon who is obviously influenced by far right wing rhetoric. That's who talks about this gold standard stuff. Doesn't Glenn Beck advocate buying up gold and even advertise gold dealers?
Not as clear-cut as the guy who shot up the Unitarian Church -- but you wingnutters denied he was of your ilk, too. Or tried to, which was difficult, considering his very specific suicide note.
Arizona is a hateful place.
And Say-rah's dancing daughter is moving there.
That's double funny, since she's moving away from her babydaddy to be with her boyfriend while collecting money to promote abstinence. These Palins are making a bundle off the nutter fringe.

I suppose this seemed coherent at 10:33

This dude was as influenced by the politics of Mickey Mouse as he was Beck. Maybe we should put a "target" on that hatemonger's palace in Orlanda as well.

Lord, I used the word "target" .. I'll have to check the news after church and see if there were consequences.

At least you nullified the idiotic comment made by your Anonymous2 comrade above that drew equivalence between a weak, shrill voice on DailyKos and Sarah Palin's advocacy to RELOAD while putting political opponents in her infamous "crosshairs." So thanks for that.

Lamar Speaks

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., noted Sunday that the suspect in the Tucson rampage was connected to Internet postings that included Marxist and Nazi literature.
"That's not the profile of a typical tea party member, if that's the inference that's being made," he said on CNN.

I would beg to differ. That's exactly the profile of a typical Tea Party member. Face it, beyond uniting people in hatred against negroes, homosexuals and intelligent people who "think they're smarter than us just because they paid attention in school" the Republican party offers nothing to the American agenda.

Senior Senator Cautions Republicans

ANONYMOUSLY.

A senior Republican senator, speaking anonymously in order to freely discuss the tragedy, told POLITICO that the Giffords shooting should be taken as a “cautionary tale” by Republicans.

“There is a need for some reflection here - what is too far now?” said the senator. “What was too far when Oklahoma City happened is accepted now. There’s been a desensitizing. These town halls and cable TV and talk radio, everybody’s trying to outdo each other.”

The vast majority of tea party activists, this senator said, ought not be impugned.

“They’re talking about things most mainstream Americans are talking about, like spending and debt,” the Republican said, before adding that politicians of all stripes need to emphasize in the coming days that “tone matters.”

“And the Republican Party in particular needs to reinforce that,” the senator said.

He/She had better hope Lamar Alexander doesn't find out who they are since we should "not be talking about it."

Republican 12th Commandment

Newt Gingrich: "reshaping the entire nation through the news media"

until Newt Gingrich came along, our politics had progressed from Voltaire's ideal to saying our opponents were wrong or stupid, but they had never slouched that extra mile toward Bethlehem to where we called our opponents evil.

No Democrat would never have said the Republican Party was trying to destroy America, at least none in the mainstream. And the opposite was also true; aside from the lunatic fringe, both parties at least respected each other that much. But as Gingrich built toward the Republicans' 1994 victory, he developed a game plan for conservative candidates in which language was crucial. He urged Republicans to use words like "sick," "demented" and "evil" about their opponents. It became the 12th commandment for Republicans -- Never speak civilly of any Democrats.

...And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us. --John 1:14

Powell memo, 1971

How might this year’s election have been different if progressives across the country were taught how to deconstruct conservative stories and challenge them in a manner that fundamentally weakens their influence?

I have been reading here and I can not understand it!

I have known personnally an individual who needed help to overcome a mental condition. This individual was not the violent type, thank God.

But, when speaking with this person when off the meds, no sane person could get from point A to the mentally off-balanced B through any sane thought process.

The directions that an unbalanced mind takes is not subject to evaluation by any sane standard. Period!

This is so tragic.........and may have been preventable if this person had the help he so needed.

Why do you think this? Do you have any evidence that insanity is completely inscrutable to the sane?

It sounds as though you're making a claim that you don't know, so no one can possibly know. That's not valid evidence.
