Amy Broyles throws her hat in the ring and makes a case why she should be appointed as a replacement commissioner. See the full e-mail press release after the jump.

There are probably some other previous write-in candidates who could make a case, too. The question is, can they get a fair hearing in whatever process is about to unfold?

Subject: Term Limits Upheld for Knox County!

Dear Friends,

Great news! Yesterday the Tennessee Supreme Court handed down a decision that will have a huge impact on Knox County's government. Eight of our nineteen commissioners, along with the Sheriff, Trustee, County Clerk, and Register of Deeds, have been declared term limited and unable to serve out their current terms. It looks like the County Commission will be making appointments for temporary replacements in the near future, with an election for more permanent replacements to follow.

Commissioner Billy Tindell of District 2 was among those affected by this ruling. If you recall, I ran against Commissioner Tindell in the Primary and General elections last year, both times as a write-in candidate. In the Primary I came within 94 votes of beating him, and in the General I received almost 30 percent of the vote, quite an accomplishment for a write in candidate! I ran a vigorous, positive, exciting campaign, and was endorsed by The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Frank Cagle of Metro Pulse, Colvin Idol of The Knoxville Journal, Sandra Clark of The Halls Shopper, Democracy for Tennessee, and the Women Under Forty Political Action Committee.

I am running for Commissioner Tindell's seat again, regardless of when the election is held, or who may be chosen to replace him in the meantime. There is also an excellent argument for the Commission appointing me as his replacement.

I hope I can count on your support! Please help spread the word that Amy Broyles is running for Seat 2A. Let your friends and neighbors know that I am the logical and best choice to fill this position, both now as the temporary replacement, and long-term as the winner of the upcoming election.

Please also contact your County Commissioners (even the term limited ones) and let them know you think Amy Broyles is the best choice to replace Commissioner Tindell. You can find contact information for the County Commission here: (link...).

I appreciate all the help and support you gave me during the elections last year, and I will be grateful for your ongoing support in the weeks and months to come!

All the best,
Amy Broyles

Rogero got it right

County commissioners should look to the example set by then-commissioner Madeline Rogero in District 2 when a vacancy occurred in the district's school board position.

She solicited applicants, sponsored at least one public forum, and ultimately recommended Paul Kelley -- who was appointed and became a great school board member.

It's hard to see many of the current commissioners asking for public input -- which is what got everyone into trouble (term limits) in the first place. -- s.

Don't forget the first endorsement:

Second District

. . .

* Seat B: There are two well-qualified write-in candidates vying for the seat held by veteran Billy Tindell, a Democrat who is term-limited — Amy Broyles and Jonathan Wimmer. Both have Web sites both are active in neighborhood organizations and local politics. We give the edge to Wimmer in this contest. Wimmer, formerly an investment banker, is controller for a family restaurant group. He displays a completely positive image about serving in local government, strong support for schools and a dedication to issues affecting the 2nd District, an essentially urban area. Deborah Porter is the lone write-in candidate on the Republican side.

KNS curse not endorsement

The KNS usually gets the wrong candidate and rarely the one that gets my vote. In the second district, I will take the endorsements of:

"...Frank Cagle of Metro Pulse, Colvin Idol of The Knoxville Journal, Sandra Clark of The Halls Shopper, Democracy for Tennessee, and the Women Under Forty Political Action Committee."

Wimmer could not stand another loss to Amy, his ego would cave in. Plus, I just bet Rob Frost is grooming him for City Council. They are both from 4th and Gill.

Amy Broyles for seat 2B!

What's the WUFPAC?

Since Amy is from Old North, I don't see much geographical advantage to either candidate.

cowardly cat

If you are going to say provacative things have the guts to use your real name or at least an original pretend name. Are you Jonathan Wimmer perhaps, when Wimmer was all pissy when he lost the primary last time there were several bloggers that showed up all at once to plug him and then they all left, many of us figured they were him. The cat showed up around that time. I would guess someone like Hornback, but he's not even that clever. Stacey

This is Jonathan Wimmer.

This is Jonathan Wimmer. Not only is "Stacey D's Cat" not me but I have no idea who it is. I can assure you that if I ever post to this blog (or any other) it will be under my own name. To do otherwise would be dishonest and spineless. Also, just to clarify any confusion, I am seeking to replace Billy Tindell on Commission.

Got it, Jon

You do NOT want to be Stacey D's Cat but you DO want to be Billy Tindell. Got it. -- s.

process

I agree with Mark and Sandra that it should be an open process as possible. Stacey

Wow. Didn't take long to degenerate into personal attacks, did it?

someone quoting the newspaper is provacative?

If that's provacative for for you Stacy, then it doesn't take much to set you off.

I'm just hoping that it doesn't turn into county-style backroom politics. If that's the case, with Rs clearly in the majority, it doesn't spell anything good for the Ds.
