- Two Tim Hutchinson supporters (and probably both deputies) walking into two different polling locations with "re-elect Timmy" shirts on.  One where the poll workers make him turn it inside out and one where he's not challenged at all.

- One candidate, Mark Harmon, being screamed at by the wife of his opponent who apparently didn't appreciate Mark pointing out to a voter that David sued to stay in office.

- Hundreds of voters that seemed completely disinterested in the commission race but yet voted for Mark.

- One Billy Tindell supporter handing out David Collins flyers.

- One Billy Tindell supporter putting up Andy Jackson's yard signs and handing out David Collins' flyers.

- Two David Collins supporters handing out Billy Tindell's flyers.

- Me handing out flyers for Mark, Amy Broyles and Jim Andrews.

- One David Collins supporter that assured me that David was going to win and Mark stood no chance.

- One Hart Intercivic employee being delivered by Sheriff's deputy to deal with a misconfigured eSlate machine.

- One 20 foot long paper tape of the election results

- Four looks of shock when we realize that Randy Tyree, Ken Irvine and Jim Andrews all won at our polling place.

- Two looks of disappointment when Mark Harmon beat David Collins 127-85.

My good friend Amy may have lost but Mark won.  Thomas Deakins also won.  +2 for the good guys on August 3.

Congratulations to your guy

Congratulations to your guy Harmon. He ran a good campaign and I am looking forward to what he will add to the Commission mix. Collins was one of the most developer-friendly members, and Harmon has promised to fight sprawl. It probably won't be hard to distinguish between the two Commissioners Harmon when the new terms start.

To what do you attribute the difference between Harmon's result and Amy's, besides the new machines, which undeniably made it more difficult to write-in? (My parents, who are in their 80s, found the new voting machines very difficult to cope with, and both "lost" their votes yesterday. I have to think that Amy and any other write-in lost some votes because of unfamiliarity with these machines).

One thing I noticed was that

One thing I noticed was that only 68% of the folks who voted in the precincts where the Tindell/Broyles race was on the ballot voted for either candidate.   This is way lower than the other contested races, where the percentages were in the 80s.

I suspect a fair amount of disenchantment with Tindell but too much trouble or confusion to write in Broyles.  Plus Amy pissed off the party regulars with the write-in campaign to begin with.

Throw in the mix also the folks getting upset that Broyles might get the Knoxville Center voting location shut down as a future early voting location too.

Thanks!And I wasn't implying

Thanks!

And I wasn't implying anything.  When I saw him arrive I threw something on to cover my buttons, got my poll watcher sticker and headed inside.  He explained what he was up to.  I had a few seconds of paranoia, I'll admit.  But it was all legit.

I'm not sure if your speaking of the Cedar Bluff poll where I worked, But this happened there as well.

Not sure that you're

Not sure that you're implying anything here, but it's SOP for deputies to run errands for the election commission on election day. That's been going on for years, and predates Hutchison.

A few things I overheard

A few things I overheard yesterday while in line to vote:

Woman speaking to friend who just filed a change of address: "Why'd you say you live on *** St., you don't live there?
Friend: "Well, they don't know that"

Woman looking at sample ballot: "Governor? Are we voting for Governor? Who is our governor, anyway?"
Her friend: "I think it's Frist"

Man asking poll worker: "This sample ballot seems to have only Democrat primary candidates on it, is there another with Republicans?"
Poll worker: "I have NO idea".

One frantic poll worker to another: "Can't we get two people giving out access codes? This line is way too long."
Other poll worker, along with several waiting voters: "Huh?" (There were no empty voting machines, and no one was complaining about the wait anyway)

Turns out she was frantic because her line was six times longer than anyone elses. Why? Because she had the beginning of the alphabet, and the tiny signs over the heads of the four workers verifying and collecting signatures could not be seen until you were directly in front of the table. Most thought it was one line until they got close, and although several people commented that the reason they stood in the wrong line was the small, difficult to read signs, no one did anything to fix it.

The worst thing about the whole day is that I couldn't remember the last time a candidate I voted for actually won.

seen and heard

I met a guy who said he'd never heard of Tindell but was just there to vote for Tyree. Many folks don't pay attention. If the person they voted for is required to step down after the court hearing, maybe they will pay attention. Stacey
