The Tuesday evening candidate forum at Whittle Springs Middle School was a great success, attracting most of those seeking appointment to the open positions in Knox County government. They had a chance to speak before 13 of the 19 county commissioners, and answer questions from an audience of around 200 people.
Volunteers from the League of Women Voters helped me conduct a preference poll of those attending. Those numbers are presented below, but one should stress that these are but one measure that likely will guide county commissioners in their decisions on Wednesday. Other important factors will be the qualifications of the applicants and their answers to the varied questions (storm water, land development, taxes, school support, etc.) raised by the audience.
Most of the attendees were from the Second District, and most (but not all) appeared to follow the instruction to vote only in their own district and the countywide offices, Thus, with all the precautions about a preference poll ballot, these numbers were tallied at the end by two LWV volunteers:

A quick tally of percentages
A quick tally of percentages in some of the D races: Tom Salter 68.6%, Sharon Cawood 63.8%, Amy Broyles 46.2% and Elaine Davis 43.7%. The News Sentinel has set up online voting for every race here: (link...). It is on the page with the resumes. Click on the district or office and you can cast your ballot. Is it meaningless? Is it fun?
Did Brian Hornback speak as a candidate?
If so, how was he received by the audience?
He was there. Didn't speak.
He was there. Didn't speak. Sort of hung out in the back. Didn't stay the whole time.
All this could be rendered moot
if the judge rules in favor of Moncier's suit.I don't expect he will but you never know.
I personally would prefer the replacements have been elected. All the political manuvering and hand picking of successors seems unseemly. It may come back to haunt the county officials behind some of the manuvering. We shall see.
My interest lies in the unsolved murder of Johnia Berry.I have befriended that family and I would like for them to receive justice.I hope the new Sheriff makes the solving of this case a priority.I regret the outgoing Sheriff did not.
